Wines made from Shiraz grapes are full bodied and high in alcohol, aren’t they?
Not the ones we make at Mongrel Vineyard…
There’s nothing wrong with a big, bold Barossa-style Shiraz. We drink a lot of them. But we wanted to do something a little different with our portfolio.
So, inspired by young and directional winemakers both here and overseas, we’ve developed a small and select range of medium-bodied reds. Our Shiraz blends are made to be a little out of the ordinary. Diverse. They have a more restrained level of alcohol yet retain an interesting even intriguing complexity of flavour.
Our wines are made to be drunk when young and fresh.. to over deliver at the price point. They’re made to be enjoyed now or put down for short term cellaring. And most deliberately made to be drunk with food.
If you’re looking for diversity… for modern food-friendly wine… a good quality wine that you can afford to drink every day…then we think you’ll like Mongrel wines. Check out our selection
Why “Mongrel”?
The name Mongrel was born from the multiple number of shiraz clones we planted in the vineyard. It was a bit of a bitser. This was exacerbated by the frustration of dealing with the particularly vigorous vine growth and the challenges that creates in a vineyard. Find out more about Mongrel Vineyard
